HD-DVD is dead, long live Blu-Ray!2008-02-21 20:26:16It's official: Tosbiba announced today that they will discontinue production of HD-DVD hardware. Paramount/ Dreamworks and Universal - the last studioes supporting the format - has of course followed and will start releasing films on Blu-Ray shortly. It's fortunate for the consumers that Tosbiba and their partners didn't keep the "format war" running any longer, as of Warner's move to to Blu-Ray earlier this year the fight was really lost. Last year it could seem like we would have two competing formats for years, luckily we now have a winner.
Blu-Ray is also definitively the best technical format - more storage space and thus space for uncompressed audio on every release - something that was missing from most HD-DVDs. Many of them also suffered from a much lower bitrate on the video track with only 30 GB available as opposed to 50 GB on Blu-Ray. So for once the best format won as opposed to the VHS vs. Beta war in the 80's (where Beta really was the superior format).
So there is no need to sit on the fence any longer, buy your player today! I recommend getting a computer drive and set up a dedicated media computer (HTPC). This way you get the best compatibility, you don't have to worry about the regions and future improvements of the format. Keep watching this site for HTPC solutions in an upcoming hardware section. The DVD guide will of course also be updated with a guide to the world of high definition. The future is blu!
Now the real fight between DVD and HD can begin and the studios can really concentrate on promoting BluRay and getting films released. If you have a 42" HDTV or bigger the difference is amazing. An important feature that has got far too little focus is that you can also enjoy uncompressed audio as opposed to the highly compressed audio tracks on DVDs. Especially for music releases this will bring surround to an all new level.
Even though there will still be a while until we see a big number of Nordic films on BluRay several titles are now announced. The first Norwegian film on BluRay will be the low-budget horror film Rovdyr in April. More films will come this autum. One thing is sure, it's certainly exciting times for film and music fans - and who isn't? |

Even if GOP nominees make some rookie mistakes, general election voters might embrace them, said Republican strategist John Feehery. "This is a 'big change' election," Feehery said. "If you are defending the establishment, you are in big trouble this time around."
