Synopsis

En Kärlekshistoria (A Swedish Love Story) depicts the love between the two teenagers Annika and Pär. The film describes all the uncertainty, fear, tenderness and joy that they experience together. In the background is their parent's reality, the lost generation of the Swedish welfare state. Their lonely dreams about the future is lost in the everyday routine with the auto repair shop and refridgerator agency.

Produced in 1969 as one of Sweden's first feature colour films in Stereo sound. Both sound and image was remastered in 2003, and the film was re-released in cinemas and available for the first time on home video.

Review

Disc review

Video: The film has been completely remastered to a HD (High Definition) master for the theatrical and DVD premiere in 2003 for the first time in Sweden, and the result is astoundishing. It's not every day you watch a film from 1969 that technically looks like it could just aswell have been made yesterday! Okay, there is a little bit dust and rather bad contrast in dark scenes – but I've seen a lot worse on new productions, especially Swedish (for instance Sherdil, Där Regnbågan Slutar, Another Day in Paradise - to mention a few). I think the look of the dark scenes (where it usually looks greyish when it should be black) simply reflects limitation in colour filming at this time (which was still just starting), and not the DVD encoding process. The colours in day-light are amazing-looking and I've seen a lot more dust and grain on newer productions, even from the 80's and 90's. I wonder if they have digitally improved the colours, because they are really looking great. Roy Andersson even mentions on the commentary that the summer 1969 was amazingly good-looking. On the other hand I've scene colour-rich Norwegian films from this period too, but mainly in-door scenes.

Audio: This was not only the first Swedish film to fully utilize colour like we do today, it was also the first feature-film in stereo. The original track is also included on the disc, but to accompany the re-release now in 2003 they've also created a new remastered DTS 5.1 track. I haven't listened to the original track yet, but I assume that the DTS track is the best to listen to on home cinema to get the best out of the music scenes. One could argue that DTS not really is necessary for this type of film, but on the other hand it doesn't hurt of course. There's not that many surround effects here, but of course there were none in the film originally so I like that they haven't tried to put in artificial surround effects, but rather just let the music and some environmental sounds float around in the room and left the rest to the front speakers.
